For 20 years the goal was simple: rank first on Google. But in 2026 a huge share of your customers no longer clicks on results — they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews directly and get a ready-made answer with one or two recommended brands. If your business isn't one of them, you're invisible.
Two new disciplines step in here: AEO and GEO.
What are AEO and GEO?
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): optimizing for answer engines. The goal is for your content to be the source AI extracts and cites when someone asks a specific question.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): optimizing for generative engines. The goal is for models like ChatGPT or Perplexity to mention your brand inside the answer they write.
They don't replace classic SEO —in fact they depend on it— but they change the target: you no longer compete only for a blue position in a list, you compete to be the cited source and the recommended brand.
The new "first result on Google" is being the brand AI names when your customer asks.
If you're still building the basics, start with our SEO 2025 guide: AEO and GEO sit on top of that foundation.
Why this matters (even for a local business)
A tourist in Punta Cana no longer searches "excursions near me" and compares ten sites. They ask an assistant: "what day trip do you recommend in Punta Cana?" and get three names. Whoever makes that list wins the booking.
The same happens with "best web development agency in the Dominican Republic" or "who can build me an online store in Punta Cana". The question is: does AI know and trust your brand?
The 7 AEO and GEO tactics that actually work
1. Answer questions, don't just "rank keywords"
AI models extract answers. Structure your content around real questions (the same ones your customer would ask ChatGPT) and answer them clearly in the first 1–2 sentences before going deeper.
2. Use structured data (Schema)
FAQPage, HowTo, Article and LocalBusiness markup tell the machine what everything is. It's one of the most underrated AEO factors. (This very article includes FAQPage in its JSON-LD — that's why you see questions and answers at the end.)
3. Build real E-E-A-T
Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust. AI prioritizes sources with clear authorship, real cases and reputation. Sign your articles, show verifiable results and earn mentions from other sites.
4. Be quotable: self-contained sentences
Write sentences that stand on their own when extracted from context. "A landing page that loads in under 2 seconds can convert up to 30% more" is quotable; "as we saw earlier, this improves a lot" is not.
5. Consistent presence across the whole web
Generative models learn from many sources: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, social, reviews. The more consistent your brand (name, offer, location) across all of them, the more trust it earns. This ties directly into how to position your brand online.
6. Speed and technical crawlability
If AI (or the bot feeding it) can't crawl your site quickly, it won't include you. A fast, clean site isn't just good SEO — it's a prerequisite for AEO. We dig into it in a website that sells 24/7.
7. Fresh, data-backed content
Generative engines value up-to-date information with concrete numbers. Add the year, update your articles and back claims with data.
How to measure if AI recommends you
There's no mature "Search Console for ChatGPT" yet, but you can:
- Ask it yourself — query ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini about your category and see if you show up.
- Check Google Search Console for impressions on pages appearing in AI Overviews.
- Watch referral traffic from AI domains (chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai) in your analytics.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Treating AEO/GEO as an isolated trick. It isn't. It's the natural consequence of having a clear brand, a fast site, useful content and real authority. With those four pillars in place, AI finds you. Without them, no trick saves you.
That's why we tackle it alongside the rest of the system:
- How to position your brand online — so AI has a clear brand to recommend.
- A website that sells 24/7 — the technical base AI needs to crawl.
- SEO 2025 guide — the foundation everything is built on.
